Artist Marcel Duchamp will be celebrated in a series of events in Saint Louis which examine his life as an artist and that of Chess Master.

 

Tuesday, May 5, 2009 a panel discussion and book signing for, Marcel Duchamp: The Art of Chess (Readymade Press) will be held at Chess Club and Scholastic Center of Saint Louis, 4657 Maryland Avenue at Euclid. Panelists will include; scholar and author, Francis M. Naumann; Professor and author, Bradley Bailey; two-time American Women’s Chess Champion and author, Jennifer Shahade and curator Larry List. This event begins at 6:00PM with the Panel Discussion at 7:00PM and the Book Signing at 8:00PM.

 

Wednesday, May 6, 2009 a Preview Reception for the exhibit, Marcel Duchamp: Chess Master will be held at the Saint Louis University Museum of Art, 3663 Lindell Blvd. on the campus of Saint Louis University. The preview reception is from 5:00PM to 8:00PM and the exhibition will run through

August 16, 2009.

 

Considered by many to be the most influential artist of the twentieth century, Marcel Duchamp shocked the art world when he appeared to have abandoned his career as an artist in 1923 to pursue a career as a professional chess player. Marcel Duchamp: Chess Master is the first exhibition dedicated entirely to the artist’s lifelong passion for the game and the vital role that it played in his art. Chess also played a fundamental role in his relationships with many of his famous contemporaries, including Man Ray, Max Ernst, and Salvador Dalí.

 

Artworks by these and other artists associated with the Dada and Surrealist movements in Europe and the United States are included in this exhibition.
